Backyard Style Ideas

by Todd Kingsley

Are you ready to spruce up your backyard this summer? Oftentimes, backyard upgrades do not have to be expensive to be luxurious. Read through our list of backyard design ideas to help you transform your space into a gorgeous, inviting oasis.

1. Minimalist Patio

Minimalist décor pieces give your outdoor living space a cozy feel. You can hang a slim hammock or add a couple of vintage throws and floor pillows for extra seating. Alternatively, you can have a palette daybed with a rustic floor rug to define the space. Bring a heat lamp or set up a fire pit for warmth, so you can still hang out here during the cold weather. With added string lights, you can relax in this space and create added theater ambiance for an outdoor movie party.

2. Create a Calming Atmosphere with a Fountain

A modern fountain sets a soothing scene in a courtyard. You can use local fieldstones and waterways to create a scenic fountain, bringing a sense of calm and tranquility to your garden. Installing a dramatic water feature against the tropical, lush greenery makes your backyard feel like it is bursting with life.

3. Consider Outdoor Dining

An outdoor dining space, complemented with a covered grill and wet bar allows you to dine outdoors without the fuss of having to go in and out of the kitchen. You can also set up a dining area in your backyard garden using simple rustic dining furniture between rows of flower beds. This arrangement blends in beautifully with the natural landscape.

4. Set Up a Yurt

If your space allows, set up a yurt in the backyard with an outdoor wood-burning stove and lounge furniture on the exposed deck. You can dress up the yurt with large pillows and blankets for lounging and use the yurt as a glamping room or even just an outdoor entertainment area. You can still hang out in the yurt during the chillier months because they are more well-insulated than tents.

5. Go Green

Make the most of your outdoor space by planting easy-to-grow vegetables such as greens, cherry tomatoes, climbing beans, or a small citrus grove. Not only does the greenery hue create a beautiful visual landscape, but your fresh produce will also come in handy in the kitchen.

Flowers are perfect for adding a natural pop of color to your landscape. Decorate your terrace, patio, or balcony with a simple display of pots or rustic crates in beautiful arrangements of hydrangeas and tulips.

Wall planters are also ideal if you are low on space. Propped against a graphic cedar fence, these planters provide an eye-catching display of your favorite blooms. Additionally, a simple strand of rope lights will illuminate the garden paths at night while transforming your garden from bland to bright.

6. Invest In Outdoor Games

Complement your backyard by setting up play areas for both adults and kids. If you have an active household and prefer something the whole family can enjoy, consider investing in an outdoor grade pool table, a trampoline, or a patio tennis court. A nice tennis court will also add charm to your backyard, making it the coolest in the neighborhood.

You can also jazz up your backyard by building a skateboard ramp or turning cement steps into brightly patterned patio pavers, creating an excellent hopscotch board for the kids. Other lawn games, such as croquet, bocce ball, and bucket ball will provide ample outdoor fun for your entire family.
